The local knowledge
Strider mentions the Forsaken Inn as a stopping place a day’s journey east of Bree. Tolkien gives it little space, leaving its name to do much of the atmospheric work. Our version imagines that brief reference without borrowing the fuller history supplied by later game adaptations.
Our interpretation
A moonlit road and a solitary lantern give the sign an isolated, weathered character in slate and oak.
