The local knowledge
John Isidore works for a business that repairs artificial animals while maintaining the appearance of a pet hospital. In a society where possessing a real animal carries enormous significance, that discretion matters. The establishment neatly captures the novel’s uneasy boundary between the living and the manufactured.
